Saint Nobody?

19 April 2015

I recall an evening in the late 1980’s, a Bishop’s Certificate tutorial held in Matlock, Derbyshire. The leader, the vicar of Monyash, spoke of a certain farm labourer he knew, years before.

Now, he was no scholar, not even a church worker and worshipped only once or so a month at evensong. There was suggested he was not so much a quiet individual as a non-communicator with anyone really. What made him stand out was that he stopped off to and from his job on a farm both morning and night. Indeed when it was suggested that the church be locked it was his faithfulness that demanded the door be left open.

When eventually asked about his daily routine, he responded that no words were exchanged in his moments alone with God.

“I looks at him and he (Jesus on the cross) looks at me.”

With that simple statement his beautiful and basic faith was secure.
